Samsung NX30 mode dial repair
In my last article on repairing my NX30, where I documented the process of cleaning the command dial, I noted that the mode dial requires a much more annoying disassembly. My happiness from the newly-fixed command dial didn’t last long, sadly, as in just a few days, the mode dial started acting up too.
Just like last time, I’ll show the process of accessing and cleaning the dial in the form of a tutorial. All the notes on screws from the previous article apply.
Disassembly
First, you’ll need to follow the disassembly steps for the command dial until the point the front grip piece is detached.
Open the built-in flash and remove the two screws hidden under it:

Now you can remove the top plate, including the mode and drive dials. It’s held in by clips from the front, so be careful.
With the top removed, you can now turn to its underside and remove the EVF housing and a piece of plastic that covers the dials’ PCB:

Sadly you won’t be able to fully remove the PCB from the top plate now, but it’s flexible enough that you can bend it and operate on it that way.
On the PCB you can see the two rotary switches (shiny metal boxes with protruding shafts), clean them both with contact cleaner spray. You can also try cleaning them with alcohol, but this is harder as you can’t detach the (quite long) PCB.
I recommend wiping off excess liquid after some time, to make sure it doesn’t get into the EVF.
It might also be worth lubricating the plastic and metal dial assembly left in the top shell (see right picture).
Notes
Like I noted last time, the mode dial switch is likely a Shinmei SSS-60MD-10, with the drive dial likely an SSS-60MD-8.
As a bonus, I also found the part family of the shutter button switch: It’s likely from the ALPS SKRN series. The original does have the “guide bosses”. They all have the same dimensions and footprint, so there’s thankfully no danger in using the wrong one.
Once again, I’m publishing the unannotated photos of the disassembly.
